Week 3: Joy

Today’s Scripture:
Exodus 14:11-14
Ephesians 2:1-10

Reflecting on the theme of joy, my thoughts automatically become introspective of things that bring me joy personally. Joy is so wonderfully correlated to the Lord, yet I confess that my selfishness deters me from arriving at this endpoint. Giving credit to the Lord is half of the beauty of joy, for we are only able to experience it in and through Him.

It is undeniably known that one of the most common threads throughout the Bible is the idea of being brought from either a physical or proverbial death to life. The paramount example of this is the Resurrection of our Savior found in the Gospels. As we experience this Advent season, in preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Savior let us consider how to be brought to life, “from the ways of the world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air” to being “made alive in Christ.”
Another example of this “being brought from death to life” can be found in Ezekiel 37 in the story of “The Valley of Dry Bones.” The Lord asks the writer, “Son of man, can these bones live?” This question is in reference to what is understood to be a vision of a valley of dry, old bones. The writer responds humbly with “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”

My reference to this small portion of the Old Testament is twofold. First, I am reminded of a song written by the Charlotte native, John Mark McMillian, Skeleton Bones. I believe this song is written with inspiration from this passage. I have attached a link to a video of this song so that you may also hear how the Lord inspired this artist to use His words to bring comfort, peace, and joy through music and musical worship. The Lord has used this song specifically in my own life; it is my hope He can use it in yours as well.

Second, I find this story from Ezekiel to be relevant to our world today. As war, poverty, human trafficking, and various other social justice issues float in and out of my daily consciousness it is easy to look at the world and reflect in my desperate soul saying, “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know if these bones can live.” When I feel hopeless and in despair I have only to turn back to the Book of Ezekiel; for there is a promise of life given to all of us, “This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.”

The Lord brings us to life everyday; so today, accept this joy the Lord so freely gives. Allow the Lord to take your dry, old bones and make something new out of you.
