Saturday, Dec. 17 – Justin and Jess Brock

17 Dec

Week 3: Joy
Today’s Scripture
Psalm 139:1-18
Colossians 1:9-23

As we are coming to the close of a calendar year, many times people take the opportunity to reflect back on the events of the month’s pasts- the spiritual harvest and spiritual desert, the moments of happiness and the moments of tears. As the two of us personally reflect on our year, we see the desert and tears outweigh the harvest and happiness. Of course we see glimmers of great moments as well, but there were many “heavy hitters” this year that put us in a spiritual desert. During these seasons of sickness, anxiety, grieving, and frustration, we began to learn first hand that the only place to find true joy, strength, and comfort was the Lord. It reminds us of a song that we’ve been singing frequently at our morning gatherings.

God, I look to you. I won’t be overwhelmed
Give me wisdom to see things like You do
God, I look to you. You’re where my help comes from
Give me vision. You know just what to do.

So, we look to God, our source of strength and joy. Are we still struggling with sickness and anxiety? At times. Do we still have tough days? Of course. We’ve noticed when we take our eyes off of the Lord and become spiritually lazy, we get overwhelmed – we feel helpless. We forget sometimes that the God who created the Universe actually CARES. He loves us. One of our readings today says, “You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.” God truly loves us and cares for us. He knows us intimately. Even in the darkest seasons of our lives, He comes to bring HOPE, PEACE, JOY, and LOVE.

In this advent season, hope, peace, joy, and love are displayed and heard everywhere – in storefronts, on the radio, and in our worship services. For some of you, it may be really hard right now to believe that He truly brings these things to you. For the two of us, it was difficult to see that He was our joy in the midst of hard times. However, when we looked to God, and kept our eyes on Him, knowing that He is with us, we began to feel less and less overwhelmed! We pray this advent season that you will Look to God, knowing that Jesus Christ came to bring us HOPE, PEACE, JOY, and LOVE! If you are in a season of spiritual desert right now, we pray that you will lean on your brothers and sisters in Christ, knowing that we are right beside you and will stand in the trenches with you, encouraging you to look to God, your Source of Joy.

But most importantly, remember that God sent His Son to be a sacrifice for you. And Jesus didn’t leave you! He sent the Holy Spirit to be right here with you every step of the way.
