Wednesday, November 28: HOPE

Today’s Scripture:
Zechariah 9:9-13
I Corinthians 15:55-58

My parents were missionaries in Papua, Indonesia, which blessed me with the opportunity to grow up in a foreign country. Looking back I am constantly reminded of ways that I saw God moving and working among the Papuan people.  In this painting I captured a Papuan father and son.  Without an understanding of the Papuan culture it is impossible to understand the beauty of this embrace. In the past, Papua was a very hostile island, with head-hunting and constant warfare. A nation without peace. Yet, with the coming of the gospel, peace has found its way into the hearts of the Papuan people.

“I will destroy all the weapons used in battle, and Your King will bring peace to the nations.  His realm will stretch from sea to sea…” Not only have the Papuans discovered freedom from fear of death by the sword, they have also discovered freedom from death to sin, through the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and His beautiful sacrifice.  “For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Once this father was a warrior, cruel and powerful.  Now he sits in peace, with his son on his lap. As believers we look forward to the Kingdom of God to come, yet we also see glimpses of it here on earth, for it has already begun. This father has found victory in Jesus Christ and is able to hold onto the hope that Christ is coming again to fulfill all His promises.  I was able as a child to witness the power in humbly submitting to the Lord’s call on our lives, taking the good news to the ends of the earth. We are to “be strong and immovable.  Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” His Kingdom has come and His Kingdom is coming!
