Friday, Dec. 14 – JOY

Today’s Scripture:

Isaiah 40:28-31
1 Peter 1:3-9

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you don’t see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” 1 Peter 1:8

This past summer, I spent a week helping run VBS with two children’s ministries in Leon, Guanajuato.  Each day, our team watched as children from previous days brought their friends from the neighborhood along with them. It was our last day serving at one of the ministries, and as the kids began to file into the small room, I watched as one of our returning boys came in with a boy I had never seen before. I watched as the boy sat down with tears in his eyes and a fresh bruise underneath his eye. Beyond his troubled state, something about the new boy was intriguing. At first, I didn’t know why, but as we participated in the opening festivities, he continuously drew my eye. I watched as he learned all the songs, dances, and bible verses we had taught throughout the week. I was fascinated by how quickly this boy transformed from his previously saddened state into one of complete elatedness. From that point, his smile never faltered, and he had a desire to learn and participate more than anyone else in the room.

During story time, he sat straight up in his chair completely engaged in the story with constant questions and eagerly taking in answers. At that moment, I was completely captivated by the joy this boy exhibited. His eagerness and desire to know more about Christ was absolutely beautiful, and tears began to form in my eyes as I watched him bow his head, squeeze his eyes shut, and whisper words quietly to himself. Thinking about him right now still brings happy tears to my eyes. I continually find myself humbled when I think about him and the amount of joy he possessed in learning about Christ.

After the boy left, I learned that he had received his bruise in a scuffle he was in moments before his friend brought him to VBS. I don’t know the boy on a personal level, and couldn’t even understand him because of the language barrier. However, his focus wasn’t on anything other than learning about the Lord. I know, because the joy he radiated blessed me without any need for verbal confirmation. He exemplified the kind of joy I want to have in the Lord all the time.

So as the year 2012 is coming to an end and 2013 closely approaches, let us remember who we belong to, and that our joy comes from the Lord.
